“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine”. These are the words to a hymn we sometimes sing in church; a hymn I grew up singing at Vacation Bible School in the church I was raised in. They are the words my sister punctuated the eulogy she gave for our mother’s funeral service as she enumerated the various stages of my mother’s life and how she touched the lives of others.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Many feel that we are in a time of darkness where the dark emotions: anger, hate, fear, distrust, greed, etc. are the dominate forces. We question what can I, as an individual, do about it. A drop of water has little effect on the ocean; a grain of sand is lost on the shore. But, the truth is, a single light is visible in the dark and when enough lights combine their energy they overcome the darkness. That’s another hymn that Dr. King was familiar with: “We Shall Overcome”. We get to create our own reality, fill yours with positive emotions, love, empathy, kindness, compassion, joy, gratitude, respect, etc. Don’t respond to the darkness with darkness. Put forth your light and your love and know they are the more powerful forces, and they will overcome the dark. Be remembered for the times you let your light shine. Peace, Roy Montgomery
